Involvement of the visual evoked potentials in type 2 diabetes
2013
Objective :To assess the function of the optic pathway in type 2 diabetics without retinopathy (40 subjects) or with mild Non Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy (40 subjects). Methods: VEPs , elicited by means of pattern-reversal stimulation, were studied in a group of 80 non-insulin-dependent diabetics . Results: In subjects suffering from diabetes for less than 10 years, with mild retinopathy or without retinopathy, the amplitude N75-P100 decreased, and this is statistically significant with stimulation at 15’. As the time from disease onset increases, VEP latency (P100) shows a greater increase with the use of small checks (15’), than with large checks (30’) and this becomes statisticall…
Experimental and Emerging Free Fatty Acid Receptor Agonists for the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes
2022
The current management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) includes incretin-based treatments able to enhance insulin secretion and peripheral insulin sensitivity as well as improve body mass, inflammation, plasma lipids, blood pressure, and cardiovascular outcomes. Dietary Free Fatty Acids (FFA) regulate metabolic and anti-inflammatory processes through their action on incretins. Selective synthetic ligands for FFA1-4 receptors have been developed as potential treatments for T2DM. To comprehensively review the available evidence for the potential role of FFA receptor agonists in the treatment of T2DM, we performed an electronic database search assessing the association between FFAs, T2DM, i…
Impact of Glucose-Lowering Medications on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Risk in Type 2 Diabetes
2020
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is associated with a high risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease. Among the well-known pathophysiologic factors, crucial roles are played by endothelial dysfunction (caused by oxidative stress and inflammation hyperglycemia-linked), increased activity of nuclear factor kB, altered macrophage polarization, and reduced synthesis of resident endothelial progenitor cells. As consequence, a potentially rapid progression of the atherosclerotic disease with a higher propensity to unstable plaque is arguable, finally leading to significantly increased cardiovascular mortality. Main managements are focused on both prevention and early diagnosis, by target…
Metformīna intolerances patoģenēze
2019
36 pacientiem, kuri lietoja metforminu bija blakusparādības, šī pacientu grupa bija pētāmā grupa, savukārt 304 pacienti, kuriem nebija blakusparādību no metformina lietošanas, tika iekļauti kontrolgrupā. Kontrolgrupā un pētāmā grupā tika analizēti un salīdzināti dažādi pacientu faktori, lai noteiktu to ietekmi uz blakusparādīb…
Translating recent results from the Cardiovascular Outcomes Trials into clinical practice: recommendations from the Central and Eastern European Diab…
2017
Aims These recommendations aim to improve care for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) at high cardiovascular (CV) risk in Central and Eastern Europe. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and/or chronic kidney disease (CKD) are major interdependent comorbidities in patients with T2D, accounting for 50% of mortality. Following recent CV outcomes trial (CVOT) results, including those from EMPA-REG OUTCOME®, LEADER®, SUSTAIN™-6 and, most recently, the CANVAS study, it is essential to develop regional expert consensus recommendations to aid physicians in interpreting these newest data to clinical practice. Methods The Central and Eastern European Diabetes Expert Group (CEEDEG) followed a Delphi method …
Effects of liraglutide on plasma ghrelin concentrations and oxidative stress in patients with type 2 diabetes: a 2-month prospective pilot study.

Non-glycemic effects of pioglitazone and incretin-based therapies.
2013
Atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events are highly prevalent and represent the major cause of mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, there is significant interest in the non-glycemic properties of anti-diabetic agents, particularly on those that are effective on cardiovascular risk factors. Thiazolidinediones and incretin-based therapies (IBTs) represent some of the most recent treatment options approved for the management of type 2 diabetes; these agents have shown important glycemic effects, as well as a number of non-glycemic effects. The latter include those on body weight, inflammation, hypertension and dyslipidemia, thus impacting the different components of the meta…
New Sub-Phenotyping of Subjects at High Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: What Are the Potential Clinical Implications?
2021
Prediabetes is defined as a condition of abnormal glucose metabolism, characterised by plasma glucose above normal range but not as high as required for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (DM). It represents a heterogeneous entity of intermediate glucose metabolism, including impaired fasting glucose, impaired glucose tolerance, and borderline glycated haemoglobin. Prediabetes is being increasingly recognised as an important metabolic state not only predisposing to a higher probability of future progression to DM, but also to an increased risk of different micro- and macrovascular complications. The recently proposed sub-phenotyping of individuals at increased risk of type 2 DM, which disti…
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and the risk of metabolic comorbidities: how to manage in clinical practice.
2020
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinical condition that encompasses various forms of liver damage not caused by chronic alcohol consumption. In the absence of other etiologies, it ranges from ste- atosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. The prevalence of NAFLD has considerably increased over the last years owing to the current lifestyle (unhealthy diet and sedentarism). Besides, it is associated with metabolic risk factors such as obesity, arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes. Given the poor prognosis of patients with advanced NAFLD, a practical therapeutic approach is necessary to halt its natural history. However, no licensed drugs have been…
